Leave These Ancient Treasures Alone, Warns Museum

Bandar Seri Begawan - Leave these Sung Dynasty treasures alone or you could be fined or even jailed or both.

That is what the Brunei Museum Department has warned against anyone who would dare to carry the just discovered ancient earthenware treasures away.

The Archaeological Department is carrying out research on a possible historical site at the Sungai Limau Manis area in the Brunei-Muara District.

The research is a follow up of finding ancient earthenware remains in the area two months ago by two men.

According to Museum officials a large variety of artefacts have been found at the river site.

The materials surfaced during digging to deepen and widen the river to avoid flooding.

Based on the date of the earthenware found, the site is believed to be of the Sung Dynasty during the 12th and 13th Century.

It is believed that some people went to the area to take away the surfacing artefacts.

According to the 1967 Antiquities and Treasure, 1984 and 1981 Amendment, it is against the law for any person to take the artefacts because such archaeological materials belong to the Brunei government.

Anyone found guilty could be fined, jailed or both.
