Consumers complain of rights being
abused
By Azlan Othman
Several people called for consumers
to have more power to get a fair deal. Everyday traders deal with
consumers in transaction of goods and services. While these traders
are making profits, consumer's rights tend to be ignored. A foreigner
who went to transfer his photograph from his digital camera into CD in
a photo studio found out that while transferring it, the photo card
was found to be damaged by the technician.
"I bought the photo card for
US$60 and asked for compensation from the shop, but they refused to
pay any. I pay a lot of money for the service for this bad treatment.
Prior to that, I went to another shop, but they could not transfer
it."
Another gentleman bought a pair of
contact lens with the degree exceeding the required amount.
"I asked for a degree of 575,
but instead what I found out that the lens which were manufactured in
Indonesia exceeded that figure.
"I noticed it when I got
headache for three days after I wore the contact lens. I asked for
compensation but the salesgirl said that I have used these sets of
lenses. Prior to using these lenses, I checked the degree at the lens
cover which was labelled as 575."
Consumers can air their complaints to
the authority in charge through the Price Control Section of the
Economic Planning Unit.
