A 31-year-old Malaysian
transporter who was paid RM$150 per trip for conveying
contraband goods to the country, has been slapped with a $9,500
fine or 10 months' jail in default by Senior Magistrate Hj
Abdullah Soefri DSP Hj Abidin yesterday.
The magistrate also ordered
that 240 bottles of white wine, 6 kg of chicken wing, 270 kg
frozen meat and 400 packets of cigarettes seized, including the
car used, be forfeited to the state.
A father of four children,
Zainurin Bujang pleaded guilty to the four charges against him.
He admitted that he has been carrying out the activity for six
months.
Prosecuting officer ASC Hj
Jamil Hj Tuah from Royal Customs and Excise Department said the
value of the liquor was estimated at $1,080.00 and duty to be
paid was $616.00 while the value of chicken wings was estimated
at $33.00, meat at $1,323.00 and cigarettes at $880.00.
ASC Hj Jamil told the court the
defendant was caught in a Customs Preventive operation in the
vicinity of Jalan E1 Panaga Seria over the smuggling contraband
goods via the beach two days ago.
At about 7:50pm, officers saw a
boat landing at a site and was soon loading contraband goods
into a vehicle with registration no BF 6298.
The defendant, driver of the
said vehicle, tried to evade from being stopped by the officers
but lost control and crashed into a drain.
Investigations revealed that
the defendant was asked by 'Ah Tian', the alleged mastermind, to
convey the contraband goods from the place he was arrested to a
place at Jalan Ban 5 Mulaut.
