Yesterday, more light was shed on 'Autism', a condition that affects some of the nation's youths (mainly children), at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports premises. It was the first ever presentation oranised especially for parents and guardians of Autistic children.

The President of Brunei Darussalam Autism Association, Malai Haji Abdullah bin Haji Malai Othman was the guest of honour at the function where he presented certificates to the sponsors of the 24-hour marathon for the SMARTER association.

The marathon was held on October 4 to 5, 2001 where proceeds went towards the sponsorship of five representatives to attend the world's first Autism congress in Melbourne, Australia. The congress was held last November (Nov 10 - 14, 2002).

Understanding the proper way of managing autistic children and learning more about Autism were the main aims of holding such a presentation to the public.

It was learnt that there are currently about 100 Bruneian children who are autistic. It is estimated that there are about 29 million children worldwide suffering from autism.
