Thousands of schoolchildren are
returning to classes today for the first day of school.
However, some parents and
students are complaining that it isn't appropriate for schools
to start today, arguing that the commencement date should be
switched to Monday.
"How can we expect
students to attend classes on Thursday when tomorrow (Friday) is
a public holiday and so too is Sunday. I don't think the
students will be able to cope with the holiday mood," said
a teacher.
A 25-year-old mother complained
that her children are not able to cope with classes commencing
on Thursday.
She said after a long holiday,
students are expected to return to school just for one day and
then holiday again. "It's simply ridiculous," she
fumed.
Classes should start on Monday
to give reasonable time for teachers to make preparations and
for students to be in the mood for schooling and be ready to
take in new subjects, other people have suggested.
Some said that school should
start on a Monday, which is an advantage as it is the first day
of the week and gives plenty of days for class preparation.
