Police Make Headway In Solving
Cases
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Since the beginning of 2008, personnel from the
Royal Brunei Police Force, particularly those from the Brunei Police
District Office in the capital, have been investigating a number of
cases regarding break-ins, thefts, vandalism, false impersonation,
fraud and get-rich-quick schemes.
According to Acting Senior
Superintendent Pg Hj Rakit bin Pg Hj Osman, the police have detained
several locals who they believe would be able to help them crack
some of the remaining unsolved cases.
Pg Hj Rakit revealed that three men
and a woman were allegedly involved in several theft cases. The
matter has been brought before the courts and they are awaiting
trail.
Another four men who allegedly
committed a string of thefts are currently freed on bail until their
next court hearing.
Following a public tip-off, the
police also detained six men and two women regarding another theft
case. After being found guilty in court, all of them except one of
the women were sentenced to six months' jail. The other woman,
meanwhile, will spend the next two months behind bars.
According to a statement from the
Brunei Police District Office, a local man who sped away from a
petrol station without paying was recently sentenced and slapped
with a $1,600 fine.
Public servants cannot escape from
the long arm of the law, too. A public servant who stole an ATM card
and used it to withdraw cash was recently found guilty and slapped
with a $4,000 fine.
The police have also made headway
in their investigations over the theft of electric and phone cables
in the capital, particularly in Kg Ayer. A local man has been
detained pending further investigations.
According to the police, all the
locals detained over the mentioned cases are between the ages of 21
and 43.
Some of them are unemployed and
have had a prior criminal record.
The Royal Brunei Police Force
thanked members of the public for their continued assistance.
