French chocolate mousse murderer
gets 20-year jail term
Paris -
A 45-year-old French farmer was Tuesday sentenced to 20 years
in prison for murdering his parents by lacing their chocolate mousse
with a highly-toxic insecticide.
The lawyer for Ghislain Beaumont
maintains that it was his client's mother who pushed the couple to
commit suicide with spoonfuls of the creamy dessert on April 9,
2006. Beaumont has consistently maintained his innocence.
Beaumont, who lived with his
parents in the town of Chalmaison east of Paris, allegedly mixed bug
repellant recommended for use on vines or beets in the mousse that
was served at dinner.
While his parents were dying from
the poison, Beaumont called a friend for help and claimed to be
suffering from stomach pain after having tasted a bit of the mousse,
which he found to be bitter.
During questioning, he admitted to
having murdered his parents, saying he wanted to get rid of his
mother who was authoritative and disapproved of his girlfriend.
But Beaumont later recanted, saying
it was his mother Liliane who had mixed poison into the mousse. --
