Youth Must Acquire Job Skills
By Syed Rory Malai Hassan
Brunei-Muara
- Fresh school-leavers' inability to join the local pool of skilled
labour force is a cause for concern for the community and a major
issue as it could contribute to the country's unemployment rate.
This was emphasised by the
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports,
Dato Paduka Hj Jemat Hj Ampal during the closing ceremony of the
fourth National Skill Competition for technical and vocational
institutions nationwide yesterday.
He said youths need to prepare
themselves to go into the service of either government, private
sectors or even venture out on their own by outfitting themselves
with the proper knowledge and skills that will eventually benefit
themselves in the long run.
The permanent secretary also
pointed out, that the nation's youths play a major role in the
development and progress of the country's economy through the
deliverance of quality services.
"In the context of quality
services," he added, "we should look at it through the recipients or
clients perspective as they will determine the quality of the
service they receive, in other words quality service should be based
on customer satisfaction instead of the other way around."
Dato
Paduka Hj Jemat in congratulating the winners of the competition
said that not only did the competition displayed the winners'
enthusiasm and spirit for winning, but also their considerable
talents and desire to better themselves in their chosen fields which
was an admirable quality that could become a model to others,
especially their peers.
In this year's competition, 71
participants took part in 13 categories where 39 students took home
the first, second and third place prizes.
Of the 39 winners, only a few of
them will be selected to compete in the upcoming seventh Asean Skill
competition scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in
November.
Norhaizamdin Hj Mosbi, Director of
Technical Education from the Ministry of Education pointed out that
the aims of the competition was to improve and upgrade the standard
of vocational and technical education in the country and to identify
the competent and skilled participants to represent the country in
the upcoming Asean skill competition.
He expressed hope that through the
competition the quality of knowledge and skills among the local
youths and also local instructors will improve with exposure to
critical and actual work experience which will also prepare the
students for employment.-- Courtesy of
