Price Of Fish Goes Up
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The price of fish in the country has increased
slightly because of bad weather, according to a survey conducted by
the Borneo Bulletin. The downpour over the past few weeks has made
it difficult for fishermen to go out to sea.
A kilogramme of red snappers (Ikan
Merah) would normally cost between $6 and $7 at stalls in Serasa.
However, they are now being sold for $10 to $12 per kilogramme.
The fish stalls in Serasa are
usually crowded with part-time fishermen who would sell their catch
at bargain prices. However, only a few stalls are operating there
now.
Some fishermen have been taking
advantage of this situation by hiking up the prices of their catch.
For them, it is an opportunity not
to be missed as they are covering their losses.
According to a resident in Muara
Town, fishmongers have been rushing to buy all types of fish in bulk
from any fishermen who return from sea.
Aside from the wet markets in
Gadong and Jerudong, a number of fishmongers have set up roadside
stalls in other parts of Brunei-Muara District.
Increasing public demand for fish
has enabled these part-time fishmongers to continue running their
business.
It was learnt that some fishmongers
at the wet market in Gadong have also been getting their supplies
from Sabah. -- Courtesy of Borneo
