UBD Hosts Information Week

Begawan - The Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) officially
launched its 5th Information Week which emphasises the importance of
the sources of information for academic organisations in supporting
research and study.

D's 5th information Week was launched by the Permanent Secretary at
the Ministry of Education, Hato Paduka Hj Sheikh AcInan Hj Sheikh
Moliamad.
In his speech the permanent
secretary said that "The initiative is indeed a step towards
realising a dynamic education system in this country with the
availability and utilisation of reliable and quality information
resources and database for learn ing, teaching and research."
He added that what is being
provided is in line with the vision of SPN21 for transforming our
education system through the adoption of ICT in teaching and
learning.
This inauguration will mark a shift
for the nation's libraries and librarians from the traditional
approach in the provision of references or sources of information to
a more sophisticated and efficient digital library service pertinent
to the needs of the current education community, he said.
Themed 'Information and
intellectual development' the launching of this year's information
week is significant in that it marks the beginning of a three-year
subscriptions and usage of electronic reference and c-journal
databases for our education community.
Among activities organised during
the information week include product seminar cum training, workshops
on information literacy concept models and several other events
designed to interact with the visitors to the exhibits.
According to Dr Hj Suhaimi Hj Abdul
Karim, chairman of the organising committee, the inauguration is the
beginning of a digital journey to our teaching and learning
community that is facilitated by VILIS Brunei initiative. VILIS
stands for Virtual Library Systems of Brunei Darussalam.
This, he added, is one component of
the many systems to be introduced by the digital library initiative
of the Ministry of Education which will be completed by August 2008.

week is to create a university-wide awareness of the importance of
information in supporting academic, personal, organisational and
national needs.

create a learned society that is knowledge-based and information

part of their daily habits. It is also to instill awareness among
the public the importance of safeguarding and preserving knowledge
as the wealth for future research and study as well as to highlight
various print and electronic information that can support respective
