6th National Perinatal Symposium
To Be Held March 2
By Zalm Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The vaccination programme in Brunei Darussalam
works very well, however it is important to remind health
professionals to avoid complacency and improve the programme
further.
This was stated yesterday by Dr
Elizabeth Chong, Head of Neonatology, RIMS Hospital, Ministry of
Health Co-Chair of the 6th National Perinatal Symposium, during a
briefing to the media to announce the date of the symposium.
The symposium will be held on March
2. Themed "Immunisations: Insurance for Mother and Baby-, the annual
event will be open to health professionals.
Pehin
Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Suyoi. Minister of
Health, will be the guest of honour.
"The symposium will act as a
platform for health professionals to discuss issues relating to
perinatal and also enable them to see the available immunisation
trends for possible adoption in Brunei." said Dr Elizabeth.
The theme on immunisations has been
chosen as part of addressing infections related to childbearing
women and their babies. Vaccines have become an important and
regular aspect of healthcare but are sometimes taken for granted.
The symposium is hoped to emphasise what important contribution
vaccines have made and will look forward to what is new in the care
that shall be offered to women and children in the community.
Brunei itself has a good
vaccination programme providing free vaccines for its people against
diptheria, polio, tetanus whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella,
haemophilus influenze 13, influenza as part of avian flu
preparedness, BCG and hepatitis B.
This year's guest speaker will be
Dr Cecil Czerkinsky, Deputy Director General of Laboratory Science
Division, International Vaccine Institute, Seoul.
The event will also offer an
immunisation workshop looking at important aspects of using vaccines
safely, as well as a communication and ward management workshop,
which will look into ways of improving management-during potential
outbreak situations.
The symposium is jointly organised
by the Department of Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
Ministry of Health and the Institute of Medicine Universiti Brunei
Darussalam and supported by Glazo Smith Kline.
The symposium will be held at the
lecture theatre. Chancellor's Hall, UBD on March 2, from 8.30am to
4.15pm.
For further information, contact
the Paediatrict Clinic at RI PA S Hospital. Registration for the
symposium will open on the day itself.
