Iran Keen To Expand Ties With Brunei
By Izam Said Ya'akub

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Islamic Republic of Iran is keen to further the existing bilateral ties with Brunei Darussalam and strengthen areas of cooperation with the sultanate, said Iran's Foreign Minister.

Speaking during a visit by Brunei's Foreign Minister II, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng to Iran, Manouchehr Mottaki said:

"Given the capabilities of Iranian companies in the oil and gas sectors, construction of factories, dam-building and auto manufacturing, Iran is keen on implementing joint projects with Brunei."

Reports from Tehran also quoted Pehin Dato Lim Jock Seng as saying that Brunei Darussalam and Iran are able to cooperate in different domains, particularly in the fields of energy and tourism.

The high level exchanges between the two delegations are expected to further expand the bilateral relations and pave the way for future development projects.

Amongst the areas which have the potential for the two Muslim nations to work together on, apart from the oil and gas sector, are those within fields of education, tourism, culture and the halal food industry.

Meanwhile Iran's Foreign Minister also called on Muslim nations to join together in a bid to counter hostile propaganda against Islam and Muslim countries in the upcoming meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to be held in Dakar, Senegal. Brunei Darussalam is one of the countries which are expected to attend.

Brunei and Iran have enjoyed healthy ties after establishing diplomatic relations in 1993. Since then both have been in cooperation with each other within the OIC and United Nations Organisation.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
