Route
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Local yacht racers and enthusiasts welcomed the
inclusion of Brunei as one of the routes of the 5th Borneo
International Yachting Challenge 2008, which they said will help put
the sultanate in the tourism map and the world yacht races.
It was disclosed that the waters of
the sultanate would be one of the routes proposed in this year's
challenge to help increase the profile of the international water
sport.
They said they fully supported the
inclusion of Brunei that would help boost tourism in the sultanate.
The race may also stop over in the
sultanate before continuing to race to its final destination in Miri.
In previous years, the race started
in Labuan, sailed past the Federal Territory's harbour and ended at
Miri Marina Regatta Bay.
The challenge has attracted yacht
and racers from Brunei as well as other countries.
Brunei-registered yacht Ambil Angin
came top in 2006, runner-up in 2005 and 2003 and third last year.
Last year, 29 yachts, manned by 90
crews from nine countries, took part.
Since its inauguration in 2003, the
event has attracted 65 entries, and involved over 200 crews. -- Courtesy of Borneo
