Bandar Seri
Begawan - Around 188 voters comprising residents of Kg Sungai
Akar turned up yesterday to elect a new ‘ketua kampong’ for the
village. Present at the election was the Acting Brunei Muara
District Officer, Hj Haris bin Othman.
The election which closed at 11 am
saw the sole candidate Hj Ramlee bin Hj Mohd Zain obtaining the
majority of the votes with 100 votes agreeing, 87 disagreeing and

in the election.
The post of the Kg Sungai Akar
village head has been held by Hj Malik bin Hj Aliahmed on a month to
month basis since 2003.
The event began with the mass
recital of Surah al-Fatihah followed by a speech by the Acting
District Officer.
"Your vote for the village head
today will determine the progress of the village. The new village
head will act as the eyes and ears of the government and its
residents for the harmony and security of the village," he said. He
also added that being the appointed village head, he has the
responsibility in generating, preserving and maintaining
understanding, unity and harmony as well as to encourage a spirit of
communal activities.
A village head also plays a role in
holding meetings with the village consultative council as well as
with villagers in matters of welfare for the development and harmony
of the village especially in matters related to problems of the
villagers.
He urged villagers to take the
opportunity to vote and pick the best candidate as their village
head because that choice will determine the future that the
villagers hope for.
This was followed by a briefing on
the voting procedure by Awg Rosdin bin Hj Abdul Aziz, Special Duties
Officer followed by the start of election.
