Brunei Leading In Standard
Chartered’s Environmental Race
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei Darussalam is currently the leader in the
Race for a Living Planet, which is an environmental challenge that
Standard Chartered Bank has partnered up with the World Wildlife
Fund for Nature (WWF) to provide US$1 million to the top three
countries who acquire the most environmental pledges per capita,
according to a press release.
The funding will go towards the
winning country's environmental conservation projects.
The race involves every country
that Standard Chartered Bank operates in.
From London to Africa to the Middle
East, countries in all regions are also pushing forward on the
challenge to win the coveted prize money. Thus, Brunei's results are
immensely important.
Additionally, Brunei plays a strong
role in the Heart of Borneo initiative, which involves more than 70
per cent of the country's pristine natural forests being set aside
for environmental conservation purposes.
Apart from Brunei, other countries
on the leader board are Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The country that attracts the
highest number of environmental pledges per capita will receive
US$500,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive
US$350,000 and US$150,000 respectively.
Once the top three countries have
been named, Standard Chartered will work with WWF to identify a
shortlist of projects that requires funding in those countries.
Meanwhile, from now till March 9,
Standard Chartered Bank will award $500 to the first individual who
collects and submits 500 valid pledges.
The second and third individual who
submits 500 pledges will win $100 each, and the first ten
individuals who submit 50 pledges will receive $50 each.
Standard Chartered Bank encourages
all individuals above the age of 18 to make their pledge and hence
make a contribution towards this cause for Brunei.
The contest is open to all members
of the public.
Environmental pledge forms can be
obtained from any Standard Chartered Bank branch in the country.
All forms must be completed and
returned by March 9.
