Many Wait For One Year To Be Part
Of Celebrations
By Hadi DP Mahmud
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Twenty-four years on, the pomp and splendour of
National Day celebrations may not have changed much since
Independence Day. Every February 23, the celebrations can be caught
live on state television or radio — from the comfort of one's home
or a nearby coffeeshop — but for some families residing in Temburong
District, the event is an annual fixture in their to-do lists. "Sure
you can watch it on
TV, or hear about it from the
radio, but it's not the same as actually being there. It is a good
chance for me and my kids to get closer to His Majesty, as we don't
see him in person much," said Hj Osman Panjang, who caught an early
morning boat from Temburong to the capital yesterday with his spouse
and three children.
"My children have been pestering me
about coming down to Bandar for the celebrations since early this
month. They like to see the parade and the performances," he said.

Damit Ampuan Hj Sarapuddin, a 41-year-old Temburong district
resident, said the National Day celebrations along with His
Majesty's birthday celebrations held in the capital gives him a
chance to indulge in a change of atmosphere. "It's much livelier
here, as it can be too quiet back at home. Every year I take my four
kids here for His Majesty's birthday and the National Day
celebrations so I can relax and they can enjoy themselves," he said. -- Courtesy of
