Info Age A New Challenge For Youth
By Nela Awang

Bandar Seri Begawan - In These times of information age and globalisation, the Islamic society, especially the younger generation has been exposed to both positive and negative influences. This phenomenon has not only affected the mindset of the younger generation but also poses serious challenge for it to make the right choice.

However, a working paper by Dr Abdurrahman Raden Aji Haqqi, a senior lecturer at the Syariah Department of Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, entitled `Sexual Deviance among Youths from the perspective of Islam: Causes and Solutions' presented during the Fiqh Semasa seminar held at UBD, felt that the younger generation is fragile when it comes to facing the challenges from - environment as well as peers.

The paper stated that if this asset of the nation was not properly equipped with strong faith and self-identity, there was a possibility that this generation might drift away towards the unhealthy culture.

In general, teenage life is the golden age in one's lives. If they (the younger generation) can manage to pass through this age successfully, they would do better in the later life and the afterlife.

A strong ummah depends upon a successful and strong youth, as they are the leaders of the future.

In the examples cited in the Holy Quran, the younger generation should have honourable qualities like obedience, religious, patience, trustworthy, good manners, approach the good (beramar makruf) and prevent the bad (bernahi munkar).

Sexual deviance refers to acts such as adultery and homosexuality and such acts are despised by Islam.

In the religious perspective, those who are capable of preventing themselves from being lured into such activities speak of their inner spiritual strength and a strong self-control. Islam is serious about actions that can eventually lead to adultery or close proximity. The main cause of sexual deviance in human beings is the result of being influenced by the main enemy, the devil.

The devil can deviate humans through various factors, including parents whose behaviour can make an impact on the child.

This is relevant in the globalisation era, where the Islamic society is facing the on slaught of alien cultures. It was also mentioned that research had shown that the main reason of restlessness which leads to other problems including free sex was lack of faith and not obeying the commands of religion.

Teenagers are the main users of cybercafe with very little parental control. Peer pressure and the media can make the younger generation to be easily drowned in entertainment.

In this regard the role of the society was imperative, which should be more concerned and tackle the issue with responsibility.

Youth and teenagers are therefore needed to equip themselves with a strong religious foundation and faith, a clear mission in life and wide knowledge.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
