Spectacular Lion Dance
Performances At Chung Hua, KB
By Hanni ABD
Kuala Belait
- Chung Hua Middle School in Kuala Belait staged an annual
lion dance performance recently in conjunction with the Chinese New
Year celebrations. The performance took place in the evening in the
newly renovated air-conditioned auditorium.
The crowd came in as early as 6pm
in hopes of getting good seats. About 1,000 people including guests
and dignitaries turned up for the event.
The event was also the first time
for the Malay community from Sungai Liang and Lumut mukims to
perform with the Chung Hua Lion Dance Troupe. The school thanked the
troupe, as they had been working hard and performing during the
Chinese New Year to raise funds for the school.
To welcome the Spring Festival, the
Kindergarten Two students presented a Chinese cultural dance. The
programme continued with the secondary students singing a Happy New
Year number and entertained the crowd by performing two dances
called "Show Time" and "Ring! Ring! Ring!"
The Primary One to Four students
also performed a lively dance, which wowed the crowd followed by
another dance called "Gong Xi, Gong Xi" from Kindergarten Three
students.
Eight lions made a grand entrance
ushering in a very prosperous and happy new year to everyone. There
was also a display of martial arts performed by both the male and
female troupes.
The lions thrilled the crowd as
they performed their fancy footwork and displayed their amazing
balance and agility on the poles.
The highlight of the event was the
performance of a Black Lion making its entrance for the first time.
The Black Lion, which represents a "Fighter Lion", jumped through a
burning loop of fire on poles 10 feet above the ground. It was
accompanied by the Silver Lion, known for righteousness. They
displayed their agility and balance with poise, much to the crowd's
amazement. -- Courtesy of Borneo
