Flood Relief Money For 251 Families

Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 251 families each received $1,700 yesterday from the Fund for Flood Victims in the Temburong District or "Tabung Bantuan Mangsa Banjir Daerah Temburong". The $426,700 handed over yesterday came from the $529,351.18 collected so far for the fund.

At the Belalong Hall in Temburong, the donations were presented to the heads of families by Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Md Yusof, Minister of Home Affairs.

Managing Director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Dato Paduka Haji Ali Hashim bin Haji Daud also handed over the donations to the flood victims.

The fund was set up to collect contributions from the private sector, government agencies, non-government oraganisations and the public to ease the burden of the victims of the floods which hit Temburong District on Feb 10-11.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the fund will remain open until March 6, 2008. People who wish to donate to the fund can contact the Fund for Flood Victims in the Temburong District Secretariat, Ministry of Home Affairs at 8833803/8772978/8715101 or the Acting Temburong District Officer.

The ceremony was also attended by Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan Dato Paduka Awang Hj Dani bin Hj Ibrahim, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Pengiran Abdul Haris bin Pengiran Hj Shabudin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, senior officers from government agencies, and some of the donors.

A welcoming speech was delivered by Acting Temburong District Officer, who said, "Just six days after the flash floods, financial assistance from His Majesty's Government through the Community Development Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and financial assistance from the Islamic Religious Council through the 'Wang Baitul Mal and Zakat' were handed over to the flood victims".  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
