Bangladeshis Language Day Martyrs
By Anna Abu Bakar

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Bangladeshi community in Brunei remembered the martyrs on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day with the national flag flying at half mast as respect to them at the country's high commission yesterday.

Present at the event were the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Brunei Darussalam, HE Md Hedayetul Islam Chowdhury, the High Commission officials and the Bangladeshi expatriates in Brunei.

A special prayer was offered in remembrance of those that laid their lives.

In the evening, the High Commissioner also presided over a discussion session. February 21 is usually a day that is marked as an occasion to be observed with solemnity and favour by the Bangladeshi community.

The discussion session was attended by members of the Bangladeshi community in Brunei including doctors, engineers and lecturers.

The International Mother Language Day or National Martyrs Day is an important event for Bangladesh ever since Unesco (United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) adopted a resolution as its general conference on November 17 1999 to observe February 21 as International Mother Language Day.

February 21 is a day to commemorate the deaths of a number of students who were killed by police firing on campaigners for the recognition of Bangladesh as one of the state languages of the then Pakistan.  -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
