Over $400,000 Paid Out To
Temburong Flood Victims

Begawan - A total of $428,400 from the Temburong Flood Victim
Relief Fund was distributed among 251 heads of families by Pehin
Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Awang Adanan Begawan
Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof, the home affairs
minister and the Managing Director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah, Dato Paduka Hj Ali Hashim Hj Daud yesterday. The Temburong
flood affected expressed their gratitude for the cash assistance to
alleviate their sufferings.

The Acting District Officer of
Temburong, Matusin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba, made a welcoming
speech, describing briefly the floods that struck the district
on February 9. The district officer praised the swift response
of the National Disaster Management Agency in coordinating
relief efforts in Temburong.
Agencies involved in the relief
efforts include the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Brunei
Armed Forces, Electrical Department, Community Development
Department, Public Works Department, Environment and
Recreational Parks Department and other agencies including
non-government uniformed associations, according to Matusin.
The officer, especially
highlighted and commended, relief officers who carried out their
duties even though they were victims of the flood themselves.

In addition to showing his
appreciation to contributors of the donations, the district
officer also cautioned the benefactors to use the money wisely
and responsibly. |
Education Officer and victim of
flooding, Hj Zakir Amin of the Sultan Hassan Secondary School, made
a speech in representation of the flood victims at the event. "On
behalf of all the victims of the flooding, I extend our gratitude
and appreciation to all the contributors," he said. In his speech,
the father of two also thanked relief agencies for their timely and
effective help.
Hj Ahmad Md Husain, the village
head of Kampung Belais and Buda-buda, told The Brunei Times that
only 29 out of 45 houses in Kampung Belais and Buda-buda are
eligible for monetary assistance as they were deemed in critical
need of assistance by the government. Those which suffered minor, if
any, damage do not need the aid, he said.
The monetary aid distributed
yesterday afternoon is part of the contributions from the private
sector, government agencies, non-government agencies and the general
public. The rest of the contributions will be distributed when the
appropriate arrangements were made, according to several government
officials at the scene.
Meanwhile, the fund is still open
for donations and will continue to be so until March 6.
