Brunei Ratifies Asean Charter
By Shareen Han

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei has joined Malaysia and Laos in ratifying the Asean Charter during a ceremony which saw Asean Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan handing over a copy of letter of acknowledgement for Brunei's submission of the instrument of ratification to His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade attended the ceremony which was held on the sidelines of the Asean Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Singapore yesterday.

Brunei deposited it’s instrument of ratification on February 15. Singapore was the first to ratify and deposit its instrument of ratification on January 7.

During the retreat, Asean Foreign Ministers discussed international and regional affairs, particularly the follow-up work on the Asean Charter.

The charter, signed in Singapore last November, needs ratification by all 10 Asean countries before an economic and security bloc of 560 million people can be created.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
