By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The upcoming Brunei Forum to be held in Singapore next week is expected to heighten awareness and understanding of Brunei and convey the message that Brunei's economy is growing and new business opportunities and partnerships abound in the Sultanate for international companies.

Dato Paduka Timothy Ong, Acting Chairman of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB); briefed the media yesterday on the Brunei Forum, the first to be held outside Brunei.

The programme includes a luncheon on the occasion of the inaugural Southeast Asia Lecture by His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolk iah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, entitled "A Southeast Asia Community - More than a matter of Geography".

Others include presentations and dialogue by Brunei's Minister of Education, Minister of Energy, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II and Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources on Brunei's economy, Heart of Borneo project, energy security, human resource development and Brunei's place in Asean.

Dato Timothy Ong will present "Brunei's Changing Economic Landscape: New Opportunities for Business".

Dato Timothy Ong said, "Brunei's economy is roughly 80 years old when the oil and gas was discovered in 1929 and in 1972, we started our LNG business. These two businesses are driving our economy.

"Few days ago, HRH Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee BiIlah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office officiated the foundation laying ceremony at Sg Hang industrial park for the methanol plant developed by the methanol company.

"For us, this is the start of the third wave in Brunei's economic development. It is not just that, there are a lot of new things happening in Brunei.

There are new industries in Sg Hang, the Pulau Muara Besar project that we are starting to develop, the Innovation centre that we are launching and the national development plan (RKN) 2007-2012 has lot of allocation for infrastructure projects.

"We want the world to know there are a lot of new business opportunities and new opportunities for partnership for international companies," he said.

The Brunei Forum 2008 will be held February 19 and 20 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore. It is coorganised by the BEDB and ISEAS.

Participants include ministers, senior government figures, ambassadors and business leaders with an interest in Brunei's economic future and the business opportunities it presents.
