Language Centre
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Japan Foundation and Japanese Embassy yesterday
donated 35 books to UBD's Language Centre during a ceremony held at
the university's Chancellor Hall.
According to the UBD Vice
Chancellor, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman, the
contribution will give a boost to the collection of books at the
Language Centre and would benefit not only undergraduates, but also
members of the public who use the library.
"When the Japanese Language course
was first introduced as an elective at UBD in August 2001, as many
as 141 students signed up for the course," he said, adding that
Japanese Language has remained as one of UBD's most popular foreign
language electives for the past eight years.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Ambassador
to Brunei, Mr Hashimoto Itsuo, said that in order to promote better
understanding between countries, it is important for the people to
learn the languages, as this would give them more insight into each
other's cultures and customs.
He also noted that from December
this year, Brunei students would be able to take the Japanese
proficiency test organised by the Japan Foundation in the country. -- Courtesy of Borneo
