Massive Turnout At Study In UK
Education Fair
By Zasika Musdi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 2000 students, parents, government workers and
private employees visited the Study in UK Education Fair yesterday
held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom of the Empire Hotel and Country
Club.
The fair, which was organised by
HRD Services Global Education Link, brought representatives from
renowned universities from England, Scotland and Ireland to the
country.
Apart from the universities,
representatives from the Brunei Government funding bodies, the
Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council, and the In-Service
Training Scheme Section were also present to inform the students and
government workers on scholarship criteria and suitability of
programmes.
According to a spokesperson from
the National Accreditation Council, their main intention is to
provide the people with direct consultation on acceptable courses
giving consideration to courses that have not been done by previous
students on a 'case-by-case basis'.
"It depends on the course's
duration, entry requirement, and method of study," he added. "I find
that most students prefer full-time courses, and so far most of the
courses requested have been approved accordingly."
According to Hjh Rafiah from HRD
Services, the response has been overwhelming and very positive. "We
hope today's Education Fair will help the students to find their
places at the university of their choice, and to personally meet the
representatives," she said. "We've visited the universities
ourselves recently to gain more information, and we're very happy
that they're here today."
The Bulletin interviewed a couple
of hopefuls waiting for their turn, and Zurina Salwa bte Hj Osman,
an Education Officer for the Halal Food Control Unit was one of
them. She is hoping to pursue a postgraduate degree in Food Science,
and has her eye on a number of universities that provide the course.
"I'm not a science graduate, so I want to find out if I am allowed
to take the course," she said. "I really hope I can get a place at
the University of Reading, and that the course will be accepted by
the National Accreditation Council."
Abdul Hakim, an 'A' Level student,
is hoping to pursue a degree in Law. "I am particularly aiming for
universities in London, and the only London University (University
of Greenwich) present today is not one of them, but I still want to
get feedback from the universities concerning entry requirements and
other relevant information," he said.
HRD Services will be inviting a
number of university representatives at the company's office in
Jalan Telanai today from 9am-12pm for students who did not get the
chance to have a personal talk with any of the representatives.
