UNISSA’s Higher Islamic Studies International Seminar

Bandar Seri Begawan - Universiti Islam Sultan SharifAli (UNISSA) yesterday held the first of a two-day programme entitled "Higher Islamic Studies International Seminar" at the Chancellor's Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Present as the event's guest of honour was Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Rahman Dato Setia Hj Mohd Taib, the Minister of Education.

Also in attendance were Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abd Aziz Juned, the State Mufti, as well as Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman, the Deputy Minister of Education, who both presented their respective working papers.

The objective of the programme, as part of the university's many activities to celebrate and commemorate the establishment of UNISSA, was to identify administration systems and concepts that can be adapted by the university, as well as to expose and raise UNISSA's name at the international level, among others.

Bahasa Melayu, as well as the English and Arabic languages, was modes of communication at the seminar. UNISSA was formed on Jan 1 and the programme was the first of its kind to beheld by the university.

It began with a recital of the Surah al-Fatihah, followed by welcoming remarks from UNISSA's Deputy Rector, Dr Hj Mohd Yusop Hj Damit, as chairman of the seminar's driving committee. Pehin Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Rahman then officiated the event with a speech.

Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abd Aziz touched on the definition and characterisics of Ulama in his paper, In the Era of Globalisation: Towards Producing Ulama.

Meanwhile, Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad presented his paper, In the Era of Globalisation: Producing Muslim Scholars, in which he said that the emergence of Islamic educational institutions all over the world today is advantageous, and will help produce Muslim thinkers and scholarsin various fields and disciplines.

Both presentations were made in the first session, which was chaired by Prof Madya Dr Hj Mohamad @ Md Som Sujimon. In the second session, Prof Dr Mohd Khazer Al-Majali, a president representative from the University of Jordan, talked about Islamic Studies in the Higher Institution and Challenges in the Era of Globalisation, which was presented in Arabic.

He was followed by Dr Sidek Baba, a rector representative from Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia, whose topic was The Curriculum of Higher Islamic Studies in the Era of, Globalisation: The Needs of Integration.

The second session was chaired by Dr Ayman Abdel Raouf Saleh Ali. Tomorrow will see Prof Dato Dr Abd Shukor Hj Husin, the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, sharing his views on The Role of Islamic Studies in the Higher Institutions in Producing Human Resources for National Development.

UNISSA's Academic Advisor, Prof Datuk Dr Abd Monir Yaacob, will also present his working paper on The Role of Islamic Studies in the Higher Institutions in Promoting Research. Tomorrow's seminar will be chaired by Pg Anak Hj Amiruddin Alam Shah Pg Anak Hj Ismail. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
