Brunei May Have First Halal Shop
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei Darussalam could one day have its own halal
supermarket, as HalMart, Malaysia's newly established halal retail
store, is currently in the process of negotiating a licensing deal
to establish such a shop in the Sultanate.
HalMart,
which is under Glohex Consulting Group, will only be selling
products verified as halal by HalTrust, according to Kamal Arief,
the Head of Trading Division Hal-Mart Inc.
While the halal certification of
products would come from the respective countries' certification
bureaus, HalTrust will help verify the' authenticity of products
before selling them at the shop, he added.
According to Kamal, the global
halal food industry is estimated to be around $500 billion, if not
more.
Some 48 entrepreneurs, particularly
food manufacturers, from the private sector attended the special
briefing by representatives of HalMart at the Ministry of Industry
and Primary Resources yesterday.
Brunei's own sauce brand, CINTA,
has already signed a Memorandum of Agreement to supply CINTA chilli
sauce products at HalMart's first supermarket, which will be
launched in Malacca soon.
The signing of the memorandum
between local company Sahamada Corporation Sdn Bhd and HalMart was
witnessed by Pengiran Hajah Mariana binti Pengiran Dipa Negara
Pengiran Abdul Momin, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry
of Industry and Primary Resources.
Following the signing ceremony,
local entrepreneurs hoping to market their products internationally
through HalMart introduced their products to representatives from
the halal retail store. -- Courtesy of Borneo
