Water And Waste Management Crucial
To Sustainable Development
By Sonia K.
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A forum on World Water and Waste Management was
held at the Jerudong Park Polo Club yesterday organised by the
French Bruneian Business Association (FBBA).
Present as the guest of honour at
the event was the Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah
Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka
Haji Bakar, who delivered a keynote address.
At the forum, Mr Louis Heuze,
General Manager of Total E&P Borneo BV, the event sponsor, delivered
a speech, in which he noted that water and waste management are
crucial for achieving its sustainable development objectives.
"Total's policy on water is to
protect water resources and to optimise their use. Because water
resources are limited, we should constantly strive to use less water
and to improve the quality of our discharges. We should also
strengthen methods to prevent and manage marine and freshwater
pollution.
"For achieving this goal, Total has
dedicated a working group tasked with water conservation," he said.
On this matter, during the forum,
Samuel Heng of Environmental Science Group, Total Petrochemicals
France delivered a presentation on "Oilfield Water Management:
Total's current practices and perspectives".
Regarding waste however, Total's
policy is based on the 3Rs of waste management: reduce, reuse and
recycle. "For Total, waste management considerations are already
included in project design phases, with an emphasis on carefulness
to ensure generation of least waste possible. Further effort was
done when Total teamed up with Veolia to build and operate a used
oil recycling plant in France," he said.
The success story and Total's
methodology were highlighted by Christiane Eygun who is the
environmental coordinator of Total Exploration and Production HSE.
Ambassador of France to Brunei
Darussalam Mr Patrick Bonneville, and the President of the French
Bruneian Business Association, Mr Pierre Imhof, also spoke before
the start of the forum.
Participants at the forum also
viewed and listen to presentations by Mr Laurent Carabin, the

Management; Mr Koh Wai Keat who is the Business Development Director
