Female Traffic Police Injured In Mishap
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The police gave a stern reminder to motorists that a tough penalty awaits those who crash into uniformed personnel on duty on Brunei's roads.

The call was made following an incident Monday morning when a female traffic police was hit while on duty at the U-turn in Kg Jangsak, Gadong at 6.44am, near a private school.

At the time of the accident, she was monitoring the traffic flow along the road, which gets congested, especially during rush hours in the morning.

The driver, in his 40s, used the emergency lane on the left to overtake but hit the female traffic police. She suffered minor injuries and received outpatient treatment at the RIPAS hospital.

The driver did not come to the help of the injured policewoman or provide appropriate assistance.

The police reminded the public that those who hit and fail to provide assistance to any traffic police personnel on duty at areas that frequently experience traffic congestion, could be charged under Section 31, Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68 and the offender can be imprisoned for 12 months and fined $8,000. The offender's car licence can also be revoked for a period of not more than two years.

For the hit and run act against any police personnel, the driver can also be charged under Section 33 (1), Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68 and the offender can be fined $2,000. For subsequent offences, the driver can be fined $4,000 and sentenced to six months' jail.

The driver will also be compounded for using the emergency lane at the left side of the road to overtake under Section 39 (1), (b) of the Road Traffic Act.

The police also advised drivers to cooperate with the police on duty and to abide by the police traffic order and instructions. The driver in Monday's incident was detained and will be questioned. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
