Female Traffic Police Injured In
Mishap

Begawan - The police gave a stern reminder to motorists that
a tough penalty awaits those who crash into uniformed personnel on
duty on Brunei's roads.
The call was made following an
incident Monday morning when a female traffic police was hit while
on duty at the U-turn in Kg Jangsak, Gadong at 6.44am, near a
private school.
At the time of the accident, she
was monitoring the traffic flow along the road, which gets
congested, especially during rush hours in the morning.
The driver, in his 40s, used the
emergency lane on the left to overtake but hit the female traffic
police. She suffered minor injuries and received outpatient
treatment at the RIPAS hospital.
The driver did not come to the help
of the injured policewoman or provide appropriate assistance.
The police reminded the public that
those who hit and fail to provide assistance to any traffic police
personnel on duty at areas that frequently experience traffic
congestion, could be charged under Section 31, Road Traffic Act,
Chapter 68 and the offender can be imprisoned for 12 months and
fined $8,000. The offender's car licence can also be revoked for a
period of not more than two years.
For the hit and run act against any
police personnel, the driver can also be charged under Section 33
(1), Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68 and the offender can be fined
$2,000. For subsequent offences, the driver can be fined $4,000 and
sentenced to six months' jail.
The driver will also be compounded
for using the emergency lane at the left side of the road to
overtake under Section 39 (1), (b) of the Road Traffic Act.
The police also advised drivers to
cooperate with the police on duty and to abide by the police traffic
order and instructions. The driver in Monday's incident was detained
