'Help Private Sector Thrive, Rely
Less On Govt Jobs' By
Hadthiah PD Hazair
Brunei-Muara
- Bruneians need a shift in mentality to ensure a thriving business
environment that would benefit the nation's economy.
Bruneians
have to be prepared to work for the private sector instead of
relying on the government, or the public sector. "This is because
there are plenty of opportunities and attractive returns to be had
from this (public) sector," said businessman Pehin Orang Kaya Ratna
Setia Hj Abdul Hapidz Pehin Orang Kaya Laksamana Hj Abdul Razak.
Speaking during the official launch
of the Gadong Business School's third intake of Phase One business
incubatees, he said: "Programmes such as this (business incubator)
are a significant step in order to answer the call of the government
of His Majesty to diversify the local economy and to be less reliant
on the oil and gas sector."
Programmes
which help nurture entrepreneurial skills, said the seasoned
businessman, are set to breed the country's new generation of market
leaders, and are therefore a stepping stone in multiplying the range
of local industries available in the Brunei market.
Doing business is no easy feat,
Pehin Hj Hapidz acknowledged, but, being successful is also not an
impossible task.
"Put in your utmost dedication,
discipline, and run your business with loyalty and integrity," he
advised the new intake, adding that market studies must also be done
prior to starting up a new business. The main goal in business is to
reap profits; hence, it is crucial for those who wish to go into
business to understand the nature of their business and its
potential to avoid disappointments. Citing the teachings of Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him), the guest of honour reminded that
Islam encourages its followers to consider business as an attractive
source of income.
This, he said, should be motivation
enough for people to enter into business with gusto and confidence.-- Courtesy of
