Brunei Police Announce Arrest Of
Fugitive

Begawan - Persistence and determination shown by the Royal
Brunei Police Force (RBPF) in the hunt for a man who escaped from
the custody recently has paid off with the arrest of the culprit
noon yesterday.
Khairul
Hj Dagang, who escaped from custody on January 16, was caught
yesterday by police from Jerudong District Police and Forest
Rangers.
SAC Peng Eng Lee, Director of
Criminal Investigation Department, in a statement said that the
fugitive was caught at approximately 12.45pm in the vicinity of Spg
525-118, Kawasan Ladang Bertumpu, Kg Bengkurong Masin.
The arrest, he added, was made with
the help of Jerudong District Police and Forest Rangers and the
search operations involved several departments and units, within the
force.
SAC Peng also said that two foreign
nationals have been arrested for harbouring the fugitive.
The 27-year-old woman and the
40-year-old male, he added, will be charged under Chapter (216) of
the Criminal Penal Code for sheltering an escaped convict or
sheltering a person who is facing the arrest warrant.
According to SAC Peng, under
Chapter (216) of the Criminal Penal Code for sheltering a fugitive,
those found guilty of the offence will be sentenced accordingly.
(a) If the offence carries a death
penalty, then those found guilty of harbouring the fugitive will be
sentenced with up to seven years imprisonment and can also be fined.
(b) If the offence carries a
sentence of a maximum 10 years imprisonment, then those found guilty
of harbouring the fugitive will be sentenced with a maximum of three
years imprisonment with or without a fine.
(c) If the offence carries a
minimum sentence of one year and a maximum of not more than 10 years
imprisonment then those found guilty of harbouring the fugitive will
be sentenced with a fourth of the prison time allocated for the
fugitive or a fine or both.
SAC Peng, on behalf of the Royal
Brunei Police Force expressed his deepest appreciation for the
cooperation of all those involved in the search mission, and members
of the public that have come forward with information regarding the
whereabouts of the fugitive.
Cooperation among the police and
public has become a necessary tool as of late in the battle against
crime as can be seen from the speedy arrest of the fugitive in
mention and several other high profile cases that have been reported
