Reopens
By Zasika Musdi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS)
on Jalan Muara officially announced the reopening of its female
hostel yesterday.
Cikgu
Hjh Aishah bte Hj Muhd Husain, Director of Schools at the Ministry,
of Education, said the government of Brunei Darussalam has spent a
lot to construct the hostel's facilities. She said she hopes the
students would take full advantage of the study atmosphere to excel
in their subjects.
Cikgu
Hjh Kamlah bte Hj Mohd Daud, Science College principal, said she
hopes that with the reopening of the new hostel, students will live
more comfortably and study more peacefully.
She emphasised the importance of
cleanliness, and obedience to all the rules specified by the hostel.
She said she hopes the students living together will respect each
other and treat each other as family.
The hostel will be occupied by 18
students studying at the Science College and seven studying at the
Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR) across the college.
The students will be living in the
rooms on the second floor, wherein five to eight students can stay
together. Provided in every room are beds, mattresses, closets,
study tables and chairs, toilets and kitchen. There are also washing
machines and ironing boards provided. The students can relax in
between studies at the recreational room, which has two televisions.
Present at the ceremony were the 25
students, their parents, Science College teachers and staff.
The principal said preparations for
the official reopening of the hostel had been done with help from
the Department of Planning and Estate Management and the Department
of Administration, and the Ministry of Education through the School
Nutrition and Hostels Services Section.
In January, a warden and eight
cooks were deployed to work at the hostel in preparation for the
entry of students. The initial number of students accepted was 35,
19 from the Science College and 16 from MTSSR.
Since it was first established in
January 1970, when it was known as Sekolah Menengah Melayu Jalan
Muara, the college has undergone a number of renovations, which
included refurbishments, new buildings and an auditorium. This
caused the relocation of all students and staff to the building
designated for use by Sekolah Menengah Rimba.
Upon completion of the renovations,
students continued their studies until the official move to the
original campus in 2005.
However, the college's female and
male hostels were not completed then.
Those who lived far and were
entitled to live at the hostels had to be accommodated at the
Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School hostel.
It was not mentioned when the
college's male hostel will be completed. -- Courtesy of Borneo
