Bandar Seri Begawan - A prize presentation for the winners of the World Braille Day quiz, organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Association for the Blind in collaboration with the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education was held yesterday at the Atrium concourse of the Gadong Mall.

Present as the guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Health, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah who also presented the prizes to the winners.

Grand prize winner, Ng Wai Ling, won two return air tickets to Bangkok, while ten consolation prize winners won one-month subscription to Brunei Times newspaper and two movie tickets each.

Prior to the prize presentation, the event also saw performances by the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Health said that World Braille Day, which falls on January 4, is a meaningful day for the blind in every part of the world, including Brunei Darussalam.

The invention and introduction of writing in Braille more than 200 years ago have given hope, strength and empowerment to those who have lost their vision.

Braille has transformed those suffering from vision impairment and blindness into a literate community, giving them the opportunity to write, read and count. This gives them the opportunity to be independent as well as access to learning and higher education.

"In my opinion, the role of Braille For those who has lost their vision continues to be relevant and of importance today as it was 200 years ago," said the Deputy Minister. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
