Old Capacitor Led To Fire At
Stadium
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - An old capacitor was the culprit that caused the
fire at the electricity switch room supplying power to floodlights
at the Hassanal Bolkiah National stadium Saturday night.
The match between Brunei DPMM FC
and Myteam had to be abandoned after 35 minutes because of the fire.
According to officials from Fire
and Rescue Department, "We received the call at 8.45pm and five fire
engines from the Berakas Fire Station were dispatched to the scene."
Seventeen fire fighters were
involved in the operation, led by Supt Tuan Ranee bin Haji Othman,
Commanding Officer of Operasi 'C'. Also present were personnel from
the Department of Electrical Services.
After an initial investigation, it
was learned that an old and rundown capacitor was the cause of the
fire.
Stadium officials said the problem
would be solved before Brunei DPMM FC's next home game on February
23. The National Stadium turns 25 this year.
The fire not only raised concerns
on the condition of the stadium but broke the hearts of local
football fans when Brunei DPMM FC went down 3-2 against MyTeam in
the match that was replayed yesterday morning.
