FBBA To Hold Water, Waste
Management Forum
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The French Bruneian Business Association (FBBA)
will organise a forum on "World Water & Waste Management: An
Environmental Challenge for Brunei Darussalam", sponsored by its an
executive member, Total E&P Borneo BV (TEPB).
The forum will be held on February
5 at the Royal Berkshire Hall.
The guest of honour and keynote
speaker is expected to be the Minister of Development, Orang Kaya
Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato
Paduka Hj Bakar.
The forum is made possible by close
coordination between the major sponsor TEPB and FBBA.
It will focus on global water and
waste management challenges, and will release information about
global solutions that may be applicable to Brunei.
There will also be a presentation
of Brunei's water and waste management sustainable development
initiatives that are already underway, and a sharing of TEPB's water
and waste management practices and success stories.
In an exclusive interview with TEPB
general manager, Louis Heuze said that environmentally sound water
management practices are critical for growth and development.
He further emphasised that there is
a need to increase investment due to an ever-growing demands for
infrastructures to protect against droughts and floods.
"At the same time, we have to meet
the water supply needs of cities, rural areas and industrial users.
"Because water resources are
limited, TEPB constantly strives to use water more efficiently and
to improve the quality of water discharged by industrial processes,"
Heuze added.
As for waste, Heuze highlighted
that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated that
more than five million people die each year from diseases related to
inadequate waste disposal systems.
Waste management, he further
explained, is a key component in global environmental protection and
an important part of urban infrastructure support, because it
ensures the protection of both the environment and human' health.
TEPB's
policy is based on the "3R's" of waste management - reduce, reuse
and recycle.
For TEPB, waste management
considerations are already included in project design phases, with
an emphasis on careful analysis to ensure generation of the least
waste possible.
For the upcoming forum, TEPB will
bring in two experts from France, Samuel Heng and Christiane Eygun.
Heng's presentation is entitled
"Oilfield Water Management: Total's Current Practices &
Perspectives". Heng works for TEPB Petrochemicals as a research and
development (R&D) engineer on water treatment. He has managed R&D
projects and field tests for produced water treatment and injection
water treatment. He also specialises in separation processes -
specifically membrane processes. His presentation will highlight the
water cycle, why water management is important, and the
environmental and technical challenges.
Eygun's presentation is titled
"Total's Waste Management: Strategy and Implementation". Eygun works
with the TEPB E&P Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) division,
where she is responsible for coordinating with all TEPB upstream
affiliates for defining and implementing environmental and action
plans. Her paper will share the examples of waste treatment and
disposal initiatives in Cameroon and Congo. -- Courtesy of Borneo
