Quran Reciting Competition At
Unissa
By Dewi Mohd Sofri
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Learning al-Quran is honourable and Muslim
undergraduates should regard it as important as learning other
knowledge because there is a fear that the younger Muslim generation
may be deprived of benefits of reading alQuran.
This was stated by the Deputy
Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan Dato Paduka
Hj Dani Hj Ibrahim, during his speech at the opening of the
Musabaqah Tilawah al-Quran for Higher Education Institutions in the
region last night.
The musabaqah, organised by
Brunei's first Islamic university, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif
Ali (Unissa) in conjunction with its first anniversary was held at
the Dewanraya of Radio Televisyen Brunei in the capital.
Ten qari and qariah will be
competing in the first-ever musabaqah organised by the university.
Six of the participants are Brunei's representatives from Unissa,
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Seri Begawan Religious
Teaching College University (Kupu-SB). The other four are
representatives from Singapore's Muhammadiyah Islamic College and
Malaysia's Islamic Science University.
The ceremony began with a
recitation of Surah al-Fatihah followed by a welcoming remark from
the co-chairperson Hjh Nurjanah Hj Dollah. Apart from commemorating
the university's first anniversary, the musabaqah is aimed at
spurring a generation that is al-Quran literate. It will also serve
as a platform to integrate the minds of undergraduates from various
higher education institutions around the region. The contestants
will be judged by a panel of eight judges during the closing
ceremony tonight at the same venue. -- Courtesy of
