China's Minister In Brunei
By Izam Said Ya'akub

Bandar Seri Begawan - Oil and gas have been cited as the sector with the greatest potential for cooperation between Brunei and China.

This was highlighted by Yang Jiechi, Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China, who arrives today for a two-day visit. He also gave a resounding endorsement for trade between China and the sultanate.'

"The oil and gas sector is a pillar of our business relationship and holds great potential for cooperation. The Chinese government supports Chinese companies in making investment in this sector in Brunei, providing technical services in oil engineering so as to expand our cooperation in the oil and gas sector," said the foreign minister in a written interview with The Brunei Times.

The minister emphasised that China is also in support of putting into place an economic and trade consultation mechanism to explore new ways of expanding business ties.

Since establishing bilateral trade, business has grown by about 20 times.

Brunei has an ambitious target of reaching US$1 billion ($1.4 billion) in trade with China by 2010, and also hopes to penetrate the Chinese Muslim market. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
