Employees Urged To Be Wary Of
‘Delayed’ Appointment Letters
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Local employees must ensure that they have in their
possession appointment letters before commencing work with private
firms.
According to Hj Razak bin Hj Mohd
Daud, his son had been on the receiving end of a raw deal when a
private company his son had previously worked at refused to pay him
his salary.
His son was said to have continued
working without an appointment letter because the manager of the
private company had promised him that the contract would eventually
be issued.
When his son failed to receive his
salary after four months, Hj Razak took his son to the Labour
Department. However, an officer there told him that little could be
done given the absence of an appointment letter.
"My son did not have any proof that
he was working with the company as he was not issued with an
appointment letter. Therefore, the company could say that it never
employed my son," he said.
Hj
Razak urges locals not to start work in the absence of an
appointment letter or a contract stating the post, date of
commencement, salary, allowances, working hours, discipline and
other relevant details.
His son has stopped working for the
said company, which still owes him four months' salary.
Hj
Razak hopes the Labour Department will hold roadshows to emphasise
that workers must have with them appointment letters.
"There may be a few companies that
does not realise that they need to provide appointment letters and
contracts to their workers.
"At the same time, there may be
some others who do this to avoid having to pay their workers.
"The issuance of appointment
letters and contracts to local employers must be made compulsory,
just like it is for foreign workers," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo
