Prisons Dept. Turns Over Al-Islah

Begawan - A handover ceremony of Rumah Al-Islah between
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was held yesterday morning at the
centre in Muara.
Present on behalf of NCB was its
Acting Director, Hj Abd Aziz OKMB Hj Othman, who officially took
over the management of Al-Islah from Director of Prisons, Dato
Paduka Hj Ahmad Dullah.
Also in attendance to witness the
ceremony were senior officers and officers from NCB and Prisons
Department.
Rumah
Al-Islah, is a drugs rehabilitation centre that began its operations
on November 1,1987 under the Department of Welfare, Youth and
Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, which was later
transferred to the Prisons Department on March 15,1990.
Also located
at the centre is the Intoxicating Substances Rehabilitation Centre
that became operational on September 28, 1995 under the charge of an
Officer-In-Charge.
Amongst its objectives is to detain
and guard inmates safely, as well as providing suitable facilities
and execute the sentence and order as determined by the authorities
and train and provide inmates with various vocational skills.
It is also aimed at rehabilitating
and reforming inmates' characters through effective rehabilitation
approaches such as counselling, guidance, physical training and
education.
Facilities at the centre includes medical clinic,
dormitory, recreation/sports compound, family visiting room, dining
hall, kitchen, library, mosque, classroom, workshop, drill ground,
cafeteria, agriculture and livestock farm.
After more than 17 years under the
operations of the Department of Prisons and upon the consent of His
Majesty, the centre yesterday began operating under NCB.
To date, a total of 54 inmates - 35
males and eight females are recorded at the Drug Rehabilitation
Centre, 10 male inmates at the 'Half-Way House' and one male inmate
under the Intoxicating Substances Rehabilitation Centre.
Out of the total, 28 inmates are
admitted on court order (23 males and five female), 23 admitted on
minister's order (20 males and three females), while two male
inmates admitted on voluntary basis. -- Courtesy of Borneo
