Diabetes, Stress & Asthma On The Rise
By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - Hypertension, diabetes and asthma cases have soared over the past four years, just only in the Bandar Seri Begawan area.

These observations were according to figures put up by the BSB health center, judging by the cases referred to them during their office and public holiday operational hours.

Such health centre catchments include Mukim Kota Batu, Kumbang Pasang and Sg. Kedayan recording 2,164 cases of hypertension last year compared to 1,822 about four years ago (2003) while diabetes surged to 872 cases in 2007 compared to 531 in 2003.

Meanwhile asthma cases have almost doubled last year (2007) with 4,515 cases compared to 2,602 in 2003.

The health center, which recorded almost 100,000 patients last year, provides and offers various health services for the residents in such catchments during and beyond office hours. It also provides other assistance such as medical record, blood sampling, dispensing, dietitian consultations and a psychiatrist for the community.

Dr Hjh Salizawati Bte Mohd Zainal, senior medical officer of BSB health center told the Weekend that a healthy lifestyle is important.

We need to carry out physical exercise at least five times a week such as brisk walking and to stop poor habits like smoking. The sedentary lifestyle like sitting in the office contributes to such surges.

The health center recently held a two-day open day and exhibition where talks on such three non-communicable diseases (asthma, hypertension and diabetes) were highlighted along with talks on the proper use of medication and side effects as well as the right ways to use inhalers for asthmatic patients. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
