Scoliosis Surgery Under Microscope
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Department of Neurosurgery, along with
orthopedic surgeons and anesthesiologists, at Ripas Hospital
recently organised a scoliosis surgery workshop.
The event, held in
collaboration with AOSpine International, was aimed at treating
patients with scoliosis.
Eight children underwent the
surgery during the workshop to correct the development abnormality,
which is a sideward bending of the spine, which is mostly seen in
girls.
World-renowned spinal surgeon
Professor KV Menon is currently in Brunei to help and develop this
type of surgery in the country.
Scoliosis becomes apparent during
the formative years of 10 to 19, although in some cases, it appears
earlier.
The abnormal curvature of the spine
usually starts in a small degree, which may not be obvious, but as
the child grows, this curvature becomes more pronounced, though the
progression of the abnormality varies from child to child.
There are many problems
accompanying scoliosis, with the most conspicuous being the cosmetic
value. Adolescence is a life stage where physical appearance takes
the front seat. And it is during this period that affected children
get progressive curve.
It can be very devastating
psychologically, more so when they want to get involved in sporting
activities, such as swimming, when it is near impossible to hide the
deformity.
Other problems surrounding the
deformity include breathing difficulties and heart problems.
It is still unclear as to why some
children develop scoliosis and why it affects girls more than boys.
However, it is important to identify these children at the early
stages so the appropriate treatment can be initiated before the
curve worsens.
While wearing a brace is enough for
most children, some need surgery to correct the problem.
The surgery involves correcting the
curve and fixing the spine using metal rods and screws. The
operation usually lasts between five and six hours.
The patients will be able to walk
two days post-surgery, and usually discharged after a week. -- Courtesy of Borneo
