Education Fair To Provide Options
On Studying In UK
By Zasika Musdi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Students considering overseas studies options and
those preparing their application for British institutions can seek
guidance and support at the Study in UK Education Fair scheduled to
be held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom of the Empire Hotel on
February 5.
Of the 21 participating
institutions, there will be a good number of prestigious Russell
Group of Universities, high-ranking 60s' universities, excellent
vocational universities and, one Further Education College.
The event will provide a platform
for the students to discuss with the university staff all aspects
pertaining to furthering their studies - entry requirements,
eligibility criteria, course details, new courses on offer.
UK remains a popular study
destination among Bruneians. Students have confidence in the quality
of its programmes, innovative approach to teaching and learning, and
relevance of the courses to the changing demands of employers.
The event is organised to allow
students who have just received their examination results to
finalise their university applications in time for the scholarship
application deadlines.
Students already know the areas
that the Brunei government will focus on for awards of overseas
studies, and the exhibition will allow the students to match their
career aspirations with their results as well as local manpower
needs.
Representatives from the Brunei
government funding bodies and the Brunei Darussalam National
Accreditation Council will also be on hand to advise students on
scholarship criteria and suitability of their chosen programme.
Through direct interaction with
staff from the participating universities, students and parents will
get bona fide and up-to-date information on a wide variety of
academic and professional training courses. Students are assured of
on-the-spot counselling and high quality advice on admission
procedures.
The participating universities,
between them, offer virtually all courses at the HND, degree,
masters and PhD levels - Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and allied
health, Business and Finance, IT, Humanities, Law, Art and Design,
as well as interdisciplinary programmes such as Geomatics, Design
and Technology, Creative Industries, etc.
Britain takes a lead in the
development of its courses and programmes; educationalists and human
resource managers will find the exhibition useful to obtain details
of new programmes that have been recently introduced, or changes in
the regulations of professional programmes.
The event is organised by the HRD
Services Global Education Link, which has been involved in
university placement and education project management for 10 years.
"It is very useful for the students to have personal discussions
with the university staff. Brunei students are unable to visit a
university and this is the next best opportunity, especially during
such a crucial time when students need to finalise their university
application," said Dr Smita Wimmer of HRD Services.
"We have timed the event so that
the exhibition provides the opportunity for students to make
informed decisions about their university choice so that the
application process is sorted out in time for the scholarship
deadlines," added Dr Wimmer.
Students who have just received
their results but have not applied will have the chance to discuss
their course choice based on their actual results.
In addition, the universities can
have a good indication of their eligibility which would save the
student considerable time when they apply through UCAS.
Students are advised to do a course
search on participating universities' websites before visiting the
exhibition so that they can target the universities that they want
to talk to, and also obtain the relevant information from the
overseas visitors in a structured manner.
School leavers should also bear in
mind that the exhibition is not a suitable forum to evaluate
possible career solutions with their A' Level results. The decision
on what to study should come from the students themselves.
"University staff fined it
extremely difficult to suggest to the students what career to take
up," said Hjh Rafiah.
"They repeatedly get approached by
students who just want to know what they should study at university
level based on their current grades. We strongly advice the students
to do the background work before coming to the exhibition. This
would allow them to maximise on obtaining the relevant information."
Students are most welcome to
contact HRD Services Global Education Link at 2650800 if they wish
to find out more about the visiting universities before the
exhibition. -- Courtesy of Borneo
