Speakers’ Club Holds Annual
Contests
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Speakers' Club members participated at
its annual Club Table Topics and International Speech contests at
the SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre on Tuesday.
The Brunei Speakers' Club is a
local chapter of the Toastmasters International, a non-profit
organisation, which gives members the opportunity to develop and
improve their public speaking abilities through local club meetings,
training seminars and speech contests.
Four club members - Ang Ley Hian,
Fanni Rahadjaya, Reuben Fang and Selvarajah K Nagalingam -
participated in the contest, taking on the challenge of making an
impromptu speech for two minutes on the topic of `The mind is like a
parachute, it works better when it is open'.
The international speech
contestants followed shortly, contested by Yani Hepnie and Hasnol
Salleh, a press release said.
Numerous guests also attended the
contests, absorbing various styles of delivery in both contests.
In the spirit of Toastmasters
International, members from other speaking clubs, such as the HSBC
Brunei Speaker's Group as well as OTTERS TMC from Seria, added to
the delightful and conducive atmosphere of public speaking.
The contest was won by Reuben,
followed by the 1st runner-up, Selvarajah while the International
Speech contest went to Hasnol.
The three contestants will now
compete in the area contests, against the HSBC Brunei Speaker's
Group and OTTERS TMC from Seria, on February 17.
The winners will then have the
opportunity to represent Brunei in the Division K level, which
includes Sabah and Labuan.
The climax for the international
speech contest will be held in August at the World Championship of
Public Speaking in Canada.
The Brunei Speakers' Club meets
every Tuesday night at SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre, Jalan Pasar
Baharu, Gadong.
Meetings begin at 7.15pm and all
are welcome to attend.
There is a nominal guest fee of
B$5.
