Booze Smugglers Fined $5,400

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two Malaysian women, who attempted to smuggle hundreds of bottles of alcohol into the country, were both slapped with a $5,400 fine by the courts yesterday. If they fail to pay the fine, they will be jailed for three months.

Hiew Siat Foong, 46, and Sim Geok Ngo, 39, were caught smuggling 60 bottles ofArak Rajang, 12 bottles of Smirnoff Vodka and 408 cans of Tiger Beer at the Kuala Lurah Control Post on January 28, 2008.

The duo only declared 12 cans of Tiger Beer as they crossed the border.

The court ordered for the undeclared booze to be forfeited to the state and the vehicle to be returned to the women. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
