National Day Flag-Flying Period
Ends
By Husin Ismail
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The official flag-flying period in conjunction with
Brunei Darussalam's 23rd National Day came to an end with the
lowering of the giant sized national flag at the open area of the
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation's Complex in the capital
yesterday. The flag was lowered down to the tune of the National
Anthem played by personnel from the Royal Brunei Navy followed by
patriotic songs performed by Universiti Brunei Darussalam's choir
group.
The flag was then presented to Dato
Paduka Jemat Amp al, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports.
The giant national flag measuring
24 feet by 12 feet was officially hoisted on February 11, 2007.
During the flag-hoisting period, all houses and buildings too were
required to fly the national flags to demonstrate the people's
patriotism. Meanwhile a total of 30,000 mini national flags were
distributed in all the country's four districts to be displayed on
vehicles as a symbol of the nation's sovereignty.
The event attracted a lot of
onlookers including 19-year-old Md Shukri, who was quite impressed
with the entire ceremony.
He said, "It seems simple enough to
lower the flag, but I heard they did a lot of rehearsals to make it
perfect."
Commenting on the national flag, he
said that, "The flag is a symbol of our country, it is very
important to respect the flag and it should be treated as such,
exactly like how it was done at the ceremony today. The way they did
it just look so patriotic," added Shukri. -- Courtesy of
