Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Book Fair 2007, which is currently being held at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas, has been well received by the public. Hundreds of people, especially families, have bought educational material-from the fair.

The February 25-March 6 book fair, which is themed "Buku Memperkasa Bangsa (Books Empower The Nation), is being organised by the Language and Literature Bureau. There are a total of 98 booths at the fair.

Parents' gave the Language and Literature Bureau the thumbs up, for organising such an event that not only benefits children but parents as well. They told the Bulletin that the book fair could: cultivate the reading culture in the Sultanate. Earlier this week, children took part in a quiz prepared by the Language and Literature Bureau staff. Winners received their prizes from a representative of Pustaka Remaj an Sdn Bhd. The quiz was one of the sideline events that have been lined up for the 10-day book fair.

Members of the public can also undergo' e-Citizen computer training courses for beginners until March 6.

Yesterday, the leaders of the Council of Women of Brunei Darussalam (CWBD) led by Datin Hjh Fatimah DatoAbang. Hj Razali took part in the one-day course to upgrade their IT knowledge.

The short course was conducted by local ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence) training companies, BITEX Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Hidayah.

Datin Hjh Fatimah said the short course was to satisfy one of the resolutions made during the 12t' Asean Confederation of Women's Organisation (ACWO) General Assembly held in the Sultanate last November.

"The resolution called for women to fully explore ICT to the fullest so as to bridge the digital divide and empowering them... and harnessing the potential of ICT for sustainable and equitable development," she said.

"ACWO has placed ICT empowerment high in its agenda and plan of action in order to close the digital divide among women," Datin Hjh Fatimahadded.

She encouraged council members to join the short course-today. It is important for members to embrace ICT as its revolution has brought with it the freedom of knowledge through access to the Internet and huge advances in mobile communication, she added.

The course facilitator, Mohd Fadhilullah Tudun bin Hj Hassan, said that the basic computer course was specially designed to familiarise the public with simple Internet tools and online communication.

The book fair is open daily from 8.30am to 10pm. On Friday it will be open from 9am to 11.30am and 2.30pm to 10pm. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
