By James Kon & Azrol Azmi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei Darussalam's 23rd National Day celebrations
officially came to a close yesterday as the giant national flag,
which was hoisted on February 11 at the open area of the Yayasan
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex, was lowered down in a ceremony
full of pomp and honour.
With the accompaniment of music
performed by the Royal Brunei Police Band and patriotic songs by the
Brunei Darussalam National Choir, the huge national flag measuring
24 feet by 12 feet was gently lowered down by 20 personnel from the
Royal Brunei Navy before it was neatly and carefully folded.
One of the officers from the Royal
Brunei Navy then handed over the giant national flag to the guest of
honour at the ceremony, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Jemat bin Hj Ampal,
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The lowering of the giant flag
signalled the end of weeklong celebrations for this year's National
Day throughout the Sultanate.
The main event of the celebrations,
the 23rd National Day Parade, was held last Saturday at the Taman
Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital. His Majesty the
Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam led the celebration.
The parade and field performances
at the Taman involved more than 16,000 participants and were
witnessed by thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of
life. -- Courtesy of Borneo
