Conserve Energy, Promote
Efficiency
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Practising efficiency and energy conservation
should be in everyone's interest as it makes sense as well as
dollars, DES Director Awg Hj Aziz bin Abd Hamid said yesterday.
In the energy chain process,
efficiency and conservation improves productivity and reduces cost
as well as wastage. Burning less energy reduces toxic emission and
contributes to checking global warming, he told 21 workshop
participants from Asean and Japan.
Price hikes indicate the scarcity
in the supply of natural resources in meeting the rising demand in
energy, he told the two-day workshop on the Promotion of Energy
Efficiency and Conservation (PROMEEC) for Major Industry, Building
and Energy Management.
Energy losses in plants can result
from losses due to designs that do not incorporate energy sufficient
specifications, operations that run on inefficient methods and poor
efficiency conscious maintenance programme.
Reducing these losses will
substantially increase the plant's efficiency, but data is required
to identify and quantify the losses and subsequently suggest
suitable techno-economic solutions to minimise these losses.
PROMEEC
activities have assisted us to disseminate the energy consumption
data and reinforce our understanding and capabilities in managing
energy more effectively. They have also provided an update on the
latest technologies available that are energy smart and
environmentally friendly and we hope to build in us an energy
conscious culture, he said.
Dr Weerawa Chantanakome, the Asean
Centre for Energy Executive Director, said the PROMEEC project under
the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy and the Ministry of Economy,
Trade and Industry (SOME-METI) work programme, has made milestones
in energy efficiency and conservation.
The project strengthens cooperation
between Asean and Japan to promote a culture of increased efficiency
and conservation in the region.
The PROMEEC project is on its
seventh year of implementation. The first activity under the
2006-2007 work programme for PROMEEC building is the follow up to
survey, energy audits, on-the-job trainings and workshops in Brunei.
BSP Deputy Managing Director Awg Hj
Zainal Abidin bin Hj MohdAli said BSP is fully, supporting the
country's initiative to conserve and ensure energy efficiency.
As part of our ISO 14001
certification, we are monitoring our energy consumption to ensure
various activities are implemented in achieving this objective, he
said.
Conserving energy should not be a
government driven effort, but shouldered by all levels of society,
young and old. This is one of the strategies of the Brunei Energy
Association (BENA) to involve school children from the beginning to
understand the importance of energy conservation and efficiency, by
exposing them to the uses through essay writing and exhibition, he
said.
For the professionals, BENA has
invited speakers from Japan to share with its members on the best
practices in energy management, he said.
