Parents
By James Kon & Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD} opened its doors
to thousands of potential UBD intakes for the year 2007 during the
annual two-day `Study At UBD 2007" at the Chancellor Hall, UBD
yesterday morning.
Present as the guest of honour was
Dato Paduka Dr Awang Hj Ismail bin Haji Duraman, Vice Chancellor of
UBD, who officiated the opening ceremony.
The event is aimed at providing
students opportunities to further their studies in UBD and to find
out more about the programmes offered along with entry requirements
as well as providing parents an opportunity to know about the
programme choosing process based on their child's qualifications and
ambitions.
Eighteen booths are set up by
various divisions and faculties of UBD.
In his welcoming remarks, the Vice
Chancellor outlined some of the advantages of studying in UBD.
He said over the past 20 years, UBD
has produced more than 8,000 graduates that have fulfilled the
workforce in the public as well as the private sectors in the
country with some holding high positions and contributing to the
development of the nation.
He pointed out that from dine to
time, the programmes and courses offered by UBD will continue to be
assessed, based on the demand and suitability vis-a-vis the progress
of development in the national, regional as well as international
level.
Urging applicants to be decisive,
he hoped that UBD applicants will be able to choose wisely and make
the right decisions by taking into consideration their interests and
ambitions in the time frame of one to four years ahead.
Speaking about the development and
progress of UBD, he said ties with overseas universities, work
attachments, students exchange programmes will continue to be
established and increased. Students will not only be sent to higher
learning institutions in neighbouring countries but also to Europe,
Canada, Australia, China, Korea and Japan.
Facilities in UBD to aid studies
and learning like ICT Centre, Education Technology Centre, Library
and Research Centres will continue to be upgraded especially in the
use of iCT following the current trend, he added.
Being the first government
university, UBD maintains high academic standards through its
association with overseas universities, internationally accredited
and validated programmes and a strict admission and selection
system. Highly qualified academics are recruited internationally as
well as locally.
Currently, UBD is offering mainly
English medium and some Malay and Arabic-medium certificates,
diplomas, degrees and postgraduate programmes in eight faculties
namely Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Medicine, Science,
Business, Economics & Policy Studies, Languages, Brunei Studies and
Islamic Studies.
Meanwhile, the Bulletin caught up
with some students at the UBD Open Day. Ak Mohd Amin, 19, who
studied at Maktab Duli previously, said, "I'm planning to apply for
a teaching course, probably in physical sports."
He believed that by holding such an
event, students like him could gain an insight into the courses
offered and also give them an idea for their career options.
This view was also shared by Nurul
Iffah Amalina bte Omar also from Maktab Duli, who plans to take up
Bachelor of Arts in Education. He said the open day allowed them to
enquire about entry requirements and the courses that they might be
interested in. -- Courtesy of Borneo
