Bandar Seri
Begawan - Their work began only after the celebrations were
over. Clad in a bright orange uniform, the army of cleaners from the
Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department took over the scene as the
guests, performers and onlookers trickled out.
They picked up discarded items from
the sidewalks and the grass carpet of the heart of the Taman Hj Sir
Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien and disposed them in their garbage bags.
Others, wielding powerful leafblowers, collected the colourful
confetti that was released during the culmination of the field
performances.
Two workers - Sirus from Kg Bolkiah
A and Normah from Kg Setia - had front row views of the National Day
proceedings. The women, whose jobs were to sweep up and mop the
sidewalks and the stands of the Taman, expressed their delight over
this year's celebration.
"It was more lively and interesting
than those in past years," they said, adding that the colourful
banners, balloons and decorations were a sight to behold.
The Taman and its environs was one
of the two designate a areas for the cleaners to work at, they
explained. The other led up to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang-DiPertuan
of Brunei Darussalam's palace, Istana Nurul Iman.
With their brooms and dustpans,
mops and garbage bags, these women and their colleagues made sure
that the capital remained spic-and-span, not just after the
celebration yesterday but after every- rehearsal as well.
Their duties are far from done,
even though the grand National Day celebrations are now over.
In fact, said Sirus and Normah,
they will also be kept busy with upcoming events at Bandar Seri
Begawan, including a walkathon to celebrate the 100th year of town
development on land, today. -- Courtesy of
